Domestic Violence Training for New York Law Enforcement

This interactive training is designed to provide police officers with an overview of the law enforcement response to domestic incidents and the opportunity to apply their training, knowledge and experience to three scenario based modules. Material in these modules is relevant to all officers, regardless of their rank, duties, or years of service.

The Training Modules

This screen shows the four individual module titles and entry screen panels for each.

Begin the training: Domestic Violence Training for New York Law Enforcement

Officers complete “Reporting for Duty” first for introductory notes and a general review of police response to domestic incidents.  The three other training modules allow officers to examine some of the unique concerns related to incidents involving rural locations (Party Time?), teen dating violence (Just Normal High School Stuff?), and elder abuse by a family member (Grandma, You’re Confused!).

Each training module begins with a brief video of initial police response.  The participating officer then conducts an investigation, aided by an on-line supervising officer “mentor,” that includes: determining past incidents, collecting evidence, conducting interviews, applying NYS mandatory arrest and primary physical aggressor provisions, and identifying possible criminal charges, all while assessing officer safety throughout the module.

Completing the Training

After completing “Reporting for Duty,” officers can complete the three scenario based modules in any order they choose. Given the high level of interactivity of each module, officers are encouraged to view each in one or two sittings. If a module is not viewed in its entirety, it is recommended that very little time elapse before final completion. Also, if a module is not viewed in its entirety, it is recommended that the participant use the same computer that the course was started on to complete it so participant progress through the course and responses to activities will be uninterrupted. Completion time of the modules varies from approximately one hour to two hours.

Job Relevant Information on Domestic Violence
The training is designed to provide job relevant information on domestic violence in a flexible and convenient self-study, self- paced environment. This also serves as an opportunity for officers to have ongoing access to materials and information for refresher purposes.

Completion of any or all of these training modules may be a prerequisite to attending some domestic violence training offered by the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.
